Minutes of Special Church Business Meeting Held on 12th July 1966
Present – The Minister and 13 members. (Apologies were received from the Secretary)
The meeting was opened with a hymn, prayer & bible reading, lead by the Minister.
Minutes The minutes of the previous Special Church Meeting held on Tuesday 15th March 1966 were read, passed as correct and signed.
Proposed Loan The Minister reported that the Baptist Union Corporation Ltd. had been approached, some months previously by the diaconate, with a view to obtaining a loan to assist in the interior alterations and redecoration of the hall and kitchen. The B.U. Corporation had now replied to the effect that they were willing to grant a loan of £500 (five hundred pounds) at an interest rate of 4½% per annum temporarily reduced to 4% per annum.
The Treasurer confirmed that the present balance in the Building Fund was £215 but that there is still outstanding account due from Whitman Bros. for the upper part of the partition. Although the final figure for this account is not yet known, the balance in the Building Fund after payment was likely to be in the order of £100.
Mr. T. Jones stated that he had inspected the buildings externally and that he considered immediate action should be taken to repair several gutters, flashings and valley gutters & that the external stonework needed treatment. He had also recently discovered a certain amount of wet rot in the roof and ceiling timber over the kitchen & this needed early attention.
The general desirability of asking the Church to carry a loan at this stage was fully discussed together with the general financial position of the Church & the likely necessary period for repayment.
It was pointed out that a previous Church Meeting had resolved to carry out complete re-fitting of the kitchen.
After considerable discussion the following resolution was proposed from the chair & seconded by Mr. Axtell.
Motion - “That the Church authorises the borrowing of up to £500 (five hundred pounds) from . . the Baptist Union Corporation Limited for the purpose of interior alterations and . . redecoration, the rate of interest being 4½% per annum (temporarily reduced to 4%); . . anticipated repayment period to be three years.”

Minutes of General Church Meeting held on 12th July 1966
Mr Bonnett in the chair; 13 other church members were present.
Apologies were received from the Secretary Mr A W Dyer.
Minutes The minutes of the previous General Meeting held on 21st June 1966 were read, confirmed and signed by the chairman.
St Mary’s Burial Ground The Minister reported that the diaconate had discussed this matter & as a result the secretary had been to see Mr. Douglas of St Mary’s P.C. The legal position is that the Rector is entitled to refuse burial for anyone in the New Road Cemetery as it belongs to the Church & is not a public burial ground. However, in the past several of our ex-members have been buried there & it has been customary to donate £5 per annum to assist with the general cost of upkeep. It was stressed that this in no way can alter the Rector’s legal rights in the matter & cannot be considered to establish a right to interment for any of our membership.
Mr. Axtell proposed, Mrs E. Davis seconded and the meeting voted unanimously that an immediate donation of five pounds be made to St Mary’s Church for the upkeep of the cemetery in New Road and that the matter be raised annually for review at the A.G.M.
Young Wives Fellowship The Minister read a letter which had been received by the Secretary from Mrs. Bonnett in which she suggested that a Young Wives Fellowship should be formed at the Church. She had already discussed the suggestion with the Women’s Own Committee & they had unanimously agreed that such a meeting would be an asset to the Church & that they would be happy to co-operate. Mrs Bonnett had stated that the meetings would be planned not only to provide opportunity for members within the Church but to encourage those with only loose connections to come more into the fellowship of the Church. The meeting would be held twice monthly & would include a wide variety of topics but would always conclude with a devotional epilogue. The deacons recommended that Mrs Bonnett be asked to lead such a meeting. The proposal was fully discussed & the following resolution was proposed by Mrs E. Davis, seconded by Mrs Axtell & carried unanimously. - “that Mrs Bonnett be asked to lead a new meeting to be held twice monthly called the Young Wives Fellowship.”
It was agreed that the times & details of the meetings should be discussed by Mrs Bonnett with those within the Church, who will be able to support the new venture. When properly established, the constitution & composition of the committee would need to be approved by the diaconate.
Cleaning The Minister was pleased to report that Mr. & Mrs. Purton had asked to be appointed church cleaners on the terms outlined at the previous meeting. The deacons recommended & the meeting endorsed the appointment of Mr & Mrs Purton as church cleaners to take effect from 1st August 1966.
There being no other business the meeting was closed with prayer & a hymn.

After discussion of the wording of the resolution on a proposition from the chairman, the meeting unanimously approved the following resolution:-
1. We the members of the Northchurch Baptist Church having applied to the Baptist Union Corp. Ltd (hereinafter called “the Trustees”) for a loan of £500 so as to bind ourselves and those who will join with us or succeed us in membership hereby undertake as a church to repay the same on demand.

Northchurch Baptist Church
Secretary’s Report 1966
The past year has been one of great encouragement and blessing for the Church. It has been a year of change and consolidation but also a year in which the Church has become united and ready for the work which God has for us. Our membership remains as it was a year ago at 38 with 5 new members and 5 who have left the district died or resigned, but the Sunday Services have been much better supported and the average attendance has undoubtedly shown an increase.
The Young People’s work too shows progress. Mr. Vessey reports on Adventurers:
“The year has been one of remodelling to accommodate the commencement of “Family Church” on Sundays, and the change of leadership, due to the removal of Mr. C. Groome to Hemel Hempstead. The outcome has been the maintenance of the attendance in the week at the 30 mark, and the increase of Sunday attendance to an almost equal number.
The “Adventurers” started in June 1966 on Wednesday evenings lead by Mr. A. Vessey, and from January 1967 changed to Friday evenings with a Senior and Junior Section under the leadership of our Minister and three deacons.
The Sunday class, as part of “Family Church Service” has settled into a pattern of 20 minutes in church, 20 minutes joint activity, and 20 minutes of a lesson.
On the staff we are aware of God’s leading in this work, and give Him thanks for the measure of response and enthusiasm shown by the young people.”
In the Primary too there has been a forward move as my wife writes:
“We started at the beginning of May 1965 with 10 children and now we have 19 on the register. During the year 2 children moved up to Adventurers. The average attendance is about 14. Almost 50% of the children belong to Church members so that it would be encouraging to see more children from ‘outside’ the Church.
We had a picnic on the Common in early September and at Christmas we has a hectic Christmas party. At ‘Carols for the Family’ the Primary sang and this evening encouraged parents to come and see their offsprings perform.
There is only limited space in the Primary room to cope with a rather too-large age range of children who are from 3 years old to almost 8 years old. However, there is still plenty of room for more children and particularly 5 and 6 year olds.”
Perhaps we might pause here to remember the Saturday evening Carols for the Family which was one of the highlights of the year and we hope to repeat this again next year.
The work among the ladies was extended by the starting of a Young Wives Fellowship towards the end of 1966, lead by Mrs. Bonnett. She writes:
“Young Wives is intended to cater for the younger women in the Church who are unable to attend an afternoon meeting due to domestic responsibilities etc., and also to provide an opportunity to contact those on the fringe or outside of the Church. The meetings are therefore of an informal nature, and are as varied as possible. Numbers have so far been encouraging, although we would like to see more younger Young Wives joining us.
We pray that our Fellowship might be used as a further means of bringing others into an understanding of the Christian way of life.”
The Womens Own continued as in the past and although Mrs. Davis was away with illness for some weeks, it is good to see her back with the ladies once again. She reports:
“The meetings during the year were very well attended. We had some very good speakers and visits from other women’s meetings. We also had a day trip to the sea which was enjoyed by all who went, perhaps not quite so many of our members as might have gone but the coach was filled with friends.
The last Sunday in October was Womens Sunday when the speaker was much appreciated, and the following Wednesday was our Rally which we hold every other year.”
Mrs. Davis could not be there so Mrs. Bonnett kindly took her place. The Rally was well attended and proved to be a very helpful time to all. Mrs. Davis concludes with thanks to all those who carried on in her absence and a prayer that those who serve on the Committee may be lead by the spirit of God in the coming year.
During the year too we had our first Missionary week-end for some while which was a great encouragement and of much interest to all. I am sure we continue to remember Rev. & Mrs. Collard in our prayers. They helped so much to make the week-end a success.
During year £149 given away, a considerable decrease over previous.
The responsibility for the Baptist Missionary Society Birthday Scheme passed from Mrs. Delderfield to Miss Dell and Miss Mayo. Miss Mayo reports:
“She is pleased to say our Missionary Birthday Scheme has increased lately. We now have 24 members. Our collection from July to the end of December was £4.5.6 for which she would like to thank all concerned. If anyone would like to join she would be pleased to have their names.
The Church building has undergone a change with the redecorating and partitioning of this hall and the kitchen alterations. It has been splendid to see how all the men under Mr. Jones’ able guidance have helped in this work. We must remember Mr. Purton for his particular part and not forget Mrs. Purton who with her husband has for the majority of the year undertaken the cleaning, and also Eric for his help with the garden.
Apart from all those who have played any part in the various activities already mentioned, our thanks are due too to Mrs. T. Jones who has played the organ so beautifully for us and to Mr. Purton who has helped in this way from time to time: also to Miss Dell and Miss Mayo who look after the flower rota; to the stewards, the tea committee and to everyone else who by their presence and their prayers have contributed in any way to the life of the Church.
Last November, on the occasion of the Ministers Anniversary Week-end, we did say thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Bonnett for their leadership which has meant so much to the fellowship and it is good to know that for another year at least we shall have the priveledge of their guidance. Above all though we would wish to thank our heavenly Father for his unfailing goodness and kindness to us, for meeting our needs for supplying workers when urgently needed and for joining us together in a truly Christian Fellowship. It is therefore with confidence that we approach the days ahead, praying that He will give us faith to accept the challenge of the days in which we live and of the district where he has placed us and also the vision to see that our God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or think. May this experience of His grace be ours in 1967.
Alan W Dyer
14.3.1967
[Alan Dyer joined the Church at the same time as Cliff Bonnett and with Eileen and Jean their respective wives. They were to form the backbone of the leadership of Northchurch Baptist Church for the next thirty or so years. As well as being Vice President, Secretary and a deacon, Alan established and led the Young People’s Fellowship and founded and led the Missionary Committee].

The preacher for the service is expected to be Rev. Hugh Logan, Minister of Marlowes Baptist Church, Hemel Hempstead. Mr. Bonnett reported that the deacons had discussed this matter but were not unanimous in their recommendation. The deacon’s majority view was that we should support this service but there was a minority who felt strongly that the church should not be closed.
After much discussion it was proposed and seconded that the church should be closed on this Sunday evening & that car transport should be provided to take our congregation to the combined service. This motion was carried.
Mr. Bonnett stated that the position should be carefully reviewed again next year after the experience of this first service.
A.o.B. Mrs Purton raised the question of the bad smell of gas in the vestry & Mr Bonnett agreed to contact the Gas Board immediately with a view to rectifying this.

Northchurch Baptist Church
Secretary’s Report 1967/8
The past year has I think been one of containment and consolidation. It has not been an exciting year in the history of the Church but one where seeds have been sown which will bear fruit in due course. There have been some changes to membership and some who worshipped with us have moved away. This has left us somewhat depleted in numbers and yet overall we have been very aware of God’s presence with us and His guidance during the year.
Mr. Bonnett, who for two years to November 1967 had served the Church as lay pastor, was unanimously invited to continue for another two years. The time and effort which both Mr. & Mrs. Bonnett have put into the ministry of the Church has been very considerable and we would like them to know how greatly we have appreciated their leadership and we pray that God will continually enrich their ministry amongst us.
Our membership at 31st December last was 38, four members joining or rejoining us in 1967. Four members died or moved away in the year – Mr. & Mrs. Rose our former lay pastor moved away, Mrs. Edith Davis, so long an outstanding leader in the Church, and Mr. Bruton whose help, advice and encouragement we all greatly miss were both called to higher service.
Amongst the women the work has continued as in the previous year with the Womens Own and Young Wives.
The Womens Own report: “1967 proved to be a year of changes for the Womens’ Own, the most deeply felt being the passing of our leader, Mrs Davis. She will long be remembered for her Christian life and witness, particularly among the women-folk. Her passing left a gap which is difficult to fill.
We were also sorry when our pianist, Mrs. R. Jones, left us. For several months we struggled on without a proper pianist, but are pleased to report that Mrs. Betty Jones [Tecwyn Jones’ wife] has now taken over this job, and we very much appreciate her expert help.
Under the new leadership of Mrs. Bonnett and Mrs. Purton the meeting appears to be progressing satisfactorily, although we would welcome new members. Several older members find it impossible to attend now either through age or sickness, and their place is not being taken by younger women.
Women’s Sunday last October was conducted by Mrs. Heffer from Leighton Buzzard. It has, however, been decided that this is not the best time of year for these special services, and in future Women’s Sunday will be held in the Spring, the next being April 1969.
It is hoped in the near future that we may become affiliated to the B.W.L. [Baptist Women’s League] and that this link may be of value to us.”
The Young Wives tell us: “We have now completed the first year of our Young Wives Fellowship and it would appear to be fulfilling a useful function. It is not always easy to know the exact role the Fellowship should play in the life of the Church, but it is providing a means of contact with mothers of children attending the Primary and Adventurers, and with other women who would not otherwise have any contact with the Church.
Numbers have fluctuated a great deal, and at one time gave cause for concern, but recently the attendance has been more consistent.
The meetings are made as informal as possible, and are very varied, and we are grateful to the many excellent speakers we have enjoyed. We try to keep a balance between the lighthearted and serious meetings, and opportunity has been given on several occasions for Christians in the Fellowship to speak of what Christ means to them, and how to become a Christian.”
In the field of young people there has been a good deal of encouragement in the year.
The Primary Report: “We have had a happy year with a good deal of enthusiasm shown by most of the children. There were 22 children on the register at the end of December and the average attendance is 15. During the year 3 children have gone up to Junior Adventurers. We have enjoyed having Carolyn Watson for K.R.E.C. who played the piano and helped us for most of the year before she went back to help in the S.S. of her own church and we are glad now to have Mrs. McDonald who has taken Carolyn’s place. The large age range of between 3+ and 8 makes teaching difficult and we would welcome more 5 and 6 year olds. Roughly half the children are directly connected with the church members so that it would be good to see more “outside” children – we have room and chairs for more. However, the Primary does need several tables for the children to work at as the existing table is not large enough to accommodate all the children.”
The Adventures now consist of two main groups – the juniors 8 to 11 and seniors 12 and over. Both sections meet on Sundays and also on Friday evenings. On Sunday after approximately 20 minutes in Church there is the central period for chorus singing, Bible competition, Scripture reading and prayertime, after which the juniors and seniors separate, the Juniors themselves dividing into two smaller groups. It is in this period that the Bible teaching takes place. Occasionally there has been a Family Service which has been enjoyed by both junior and senior groups.
On Friday evening the juniors have usually enjoyed a games and activity hour often arranged between two teams. Particularly on the Friday evening the number of boys has been very few. The seniors have a mixed programme, table tennis, and a form of badminton or games, followed by a final half hour often of a more serious or devotional nature. It is hoped to build this older group into an active Young Peoples Fellowship.
The numbers in both groups have been encouraging. In the juniors there were 21 on the roll at 31st December and in the seniors 16 and the total membership is now over 40.
Leadership has been shared, Mr. & Mrs. Vessey looking after the junior section and Mr. MacDonald the seniors on the Sunday, being joined by Mr, Bonnett and Mr. Dyer on Friday.
These young people should be our Church of the future and we should all pray that the interest of the members of the older section may be maintained and that they truly come to a knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ for themselves.
The Missionary interest in the church is really extremely limited. We ae glad however to have very active Birthday Scheme Secretaries , in Mrs [Miss] Dell and Mrs. [Miss] Mayo who tell us: “We have 25 members in the Missionary Birthday Scheme. We have had 5 new members recently but unfortunately we have also lost 4 members with Mr. & Mrs. Rose and Mrs. Stratford leaving the district and our old friend Mrs. Davis.
Our collection for the year was £8.16.0 for which I thank all members.”
[Members of the Birthday Scheme received a card on their birthdays with an envelope prompting them to make a contribution.]
We had a Missionary Weekend last year with a visit from a Baptist Missionary Society Missionary and on that occasion £86 was given to work overseas, but surely here is a field where we might enlarge our interest and endeavour to become more involved with others in the overseas work. It is often when churches are giving themselves that they become places where the Lord in turn gives His blessing.
May I now say thank you on behalf of the whole Church to those who have served us so well over the past 12 months. I would like to thank particularly Mr. & Mrs. Purton for their efforts week by week in keeping the premises in such excellent order, for their faithfulness too in many other smaller ways. To them we have a real sense of gratitude in doing so many things so very well. Then too we would express our thanks to Mrs. Betty Jones who has played the organ with so much feeling and expression each Sunday and in doing this has so enriched our services. To be the church organist involves not only being at church for every service but also practising at other times and I am sure we would not wish this occasion to pass without expressing our thanks. To Mr. Tecwyn Jones for his valued help with the buildings, to Mrs. Dell and Miss Mayo for their help with the flowers, to the stewards, the tea committee and all others who have helped the life of the Church may I say thank you.
Finally, in expressing thanks I would mention all the leaders and helpers of the organisations mentioned earlier in the report. On them much depends and I am sure we need to pray regularly for them that they may be given not only imagination but also spiritual perception as they lead their organisations week by week.
As we look into 1968 I would mention three matters concerning prayer which to me appear to be of the greatest importance.
First of all that all of us may be men and women of prayer and of faith. Be ready to pray and also have faith that God will answer. Not to leave prayer to others but to pray ourselves.
Secondly, in our praying to ask that God will send to us more workers, men and women equipped to help us in the tremendous opportunities we have. For instance, I believe that with the right help we could build our young people’s work into a vitally effective part of our Church’s activity.
Thirdly, that if it be God’s will within the next few years we shall be able to call a full time minister to our work. Mr. Bonnett I know shares this view but if we are ever to do this we need to begin to pray now.
[Rev. Alexander Hodge commenced at Northchurch Baptist in 1969.]
Our God is able to do more than we can ask or think. May we learn to ask great things of God and to expect great things from God. When the report is given next year may we all be able to look back and see that this has occurred.
[Compiled by Alan Dyer for AGM March 1968]
Minutes of Special Church Meeting held on 23rd April 1968.
Present. The Minister (Chairman) & twelve church members.
Minutes The minutes of Special Church Meeting held on 11th April 1967 were read, confirmed & signed by the Chairman.
Pastorate The Secretary reported that Mr. Lewis Mann, at present the lay minister of Eldon Road Baptist Church Wood Green London., was leaving that church on completion of approx. 20 years as lay minister & would be prepared to consider a call from Northchurch. Mr. Bonnett & Mr. Dyer had met Mr. Mrs. Mann & fully discussed the position with them & somewhat to the surprise of Messrs Bonnett & Dyer Mr & Mrs Mann were interested in the possibility of becoming lay minister of the church. Other possible calls were also receiving their prayerful consideration. The deacons had fully discussed the situation & following their meeting Mr. Mann had been asked & had accepted, our invitation to conduct the services on Sunday May 12th. Both Mr. Bonnett & Mr. Dyer who have known Mr & Mrs Mann for many years were of the opinion that they would be ideally suited for the ministry of the church here & they both had the highest opinion of their Christian character. During the period of their ministry at Eldon Road the membership had grown from small numbers to a present total of approx. 160. Mr. Mann would not wish to let finance be any consideration but this would need to be considered.
A full discussion took place & it was unanimously agreed to confirm the action the deacons had taken & to hold a further Special Church Meeting on Tuesday May 14th, at which it would be decided whether or not to extend a call to the pastorate to Mr. Mann.
Mr. Bonnett explained that the proposal had his full support. He would be very happy to pass over the ministry to Mr. Mann, particularly as he felt that he was giving adequate time to the task, in view of business commitments.
Consideration was given to the position of Mr. John Maile who preached at the church on March 31st but it was agreed to leave any consideration of calling him to be assistant to Mr. Bonnett until such time as a decision concerning Mr. Mann had been reached.
Members were asked to pray that in any decision made we would be fully guided by God as would both Mr. Mrs. Mann.
There was no other business.

Thank Offering (a) It was reported that of the £240 received at the Thank Offering Weekend, approx. £80 had been received towards carpeting the front of the church, leaving £160 unallocated. The deacons recommended that £100 of this sum be used to repay part of the loan from the Baptist Union Corporation. This was unanimously agreed. (b) Mr. Tecwyn Jones produced estimates for carpeting the front section of the church & also for recarpeting the platform. It was unanimously agreed to proceed with carpeting the front of the church & stairs leading to the platform at an approx. cost of £80 but to defer recarpeting the platform.
Repairs (a) Tables for Young People It was unanimously agreed to purchase 4 small tables for Primary use & 4 tables for general use, all of a stacking variety to cost in all not more than £80. These would be paid for from a portion of the legacy to be received from Mrs Howes Estate. (c) Mr. Axtell undertook to replace the broken pan in the ladies toilet in the course of the next week or two. (d) It was agreed to obtain an estimate for resurfacing the path at the side of the church & also making a path on the kitchen side. [Which then was the far side from Cherry Tree Cottage.] The suggestion was made that this was a task which it might be possible for the church members themselves to undertake & Mr. Jones was asked to obtain some idea of the material cost alone.(e) Mr. Bonnett mentioned that on two Thursday evenings in May it was proposed to clear out the two store rooms under the church.
Finance (a) Mr. MacDonald reported balances as follows. General Fund £105 Building Fund £240 Repairs Fund £31 Missionary Fund £31 (b) It was agreed to send £5 to St. Marys Church in respect of the burial ground.

Present. The Minister (Mr. Bonnett) Chairman . 18 church members.
The meeting commenced with hymn, prayer & bible reading.
Minutes The minutes of Special Church Meeting held on 23rd April 1968 were read, confirmed & signed by Chairman.
Pastorate The Minister reminded members that Mr. Lewis Mann had preached at the church last Sunday & the purpose of the meeting was to decide whether or not a call should be extended to Mr. Mann to become the lay Minister of the church. Mr. Bonnett asked the church secretary to report on the current position with Mr. Mann following discussions he had had with him & also report on the deacons recommendation to the church. Mr. Dyer then told of talks he had with Mr. Mrs. Mann during the day spent at the church. Mr. Mann had at least two other possible calls to consider & he would only go to any church if he & his wife were convinced it was Gods will for them.
After a full discussion it was unanimously agreed to invite Mr Mann to the pastorate of the church for an initial period of five years after which to be reviewed. It was agreed that up to £5 per week be paid to Mr. Mann if he accepted the call but this to be the subject of discussion between the church secretary & Mr. Mann. There were other matters of detail which would also require attention.
Mr. Bonnett asked that all members should pray that this decision should be overruled so that Gods will be done & that all should pray for Mr. Mrs. Mann.
Mention was then made of Mr John Maile. The church secretary was asked to keep the college principal informed of the position.

Brown (General Secretary of Industrial Christian Fellowship). The Salvation Army Band from Hemel Hempstead would also be playing.
A discussion followed on whether or not our own church service should be cancelled that evening. The majority of the deacons favoured supporting the Combined Service but after various views had been expressed it was agreed to have a service in the church & members could then go either to the Combined Service or to our own.

Following a visit from Mr. Bonnett, the deacons had appointed Messrs. Vessey & Dyer to visit and report to the church. Mr. Vessey reported to the church that both Mr. & Mrs. Barker were sincere Christians & had been actively engaged in Christian service for a number of years. He proposed most warmly that they be welcomed into membership. Mr. Dyer fully supported the proposition which was carried unanimously. Mr. Bonnett stated that they would be received into membership on Sunday 15th December at the morning communion.

It was agreed to proceed with purchase of a vacuum cleaner at a cost not exceeding £25. Approx. £20 had already been received. Further gifts would be welcomed.
Mr. Bonnett proposed that the church commence a Ministerial & Manse Fund transferring to this fund £2 pw. from the weekly offerings. He pointed out that if we were ever to have a fully paid minister we would need to have funds available & also we would show to the Baptist Homework Fund that we were preparing for such an appointment. It was pointed out by a member that £2 pw. was approx. 25% of our normal collection & that we might be unable to keep to this rate each week & maintain the other work of the church. However it was agreed with one abstention to proceed with this fund, to commence on 1st January next, the position to be reviewed annually.
Pastorate The secretary reported that the deacons were making various enquiries concerning possible candidates for the pastorate.

Report – 1968/9
Since we last met in this way another Church year has passed. It had not been a particularly exciting one nor on the other hand has it been particularly discouraging – in fact a very ordinary year.
Adult attendances at services have tended to drop, particularly in the evening, however, the children have come in greater numbers. One or two who helped the work have now left but we have had replacements. The Women’s Own attendances have been gradually dropping but the Young People’s Fellowship has been growing. So it can be seen that overall the work is probably very much where it was a year ago. We now have thirty-eight members on the roll, the same number as on 1st January, 1968.
The Women’s Own report a varied and happy year during which they joined the Baptist Womens League and so now belong to a wider fellowship. The autumn rally at which Mrs. Hicks spoke was a highlight of the year but they are very grateful to all who speak week by week. The numbers coming are gradually falling due to age and sickness with few replacements coming.
The Young Wives, led like the Women’s Own by Mrs. Bonnett, also have had a worthwhile year although it has not been possible to pinpoint any positive results. Attendance has remained fairly constant but although regular invitations are given to attend the Church services and Christian members have testified to their faith, there has been little response from outsiders, although seeds of truth are continually being sown.
The work among the children and young people has undergone changes of leadership during the year. Mr. and Mrs. Dyer now lead the Young People’s Fellowship (formerly Senior Adventurers) assisted by Mr. MacDonald, Mr. Anthony Barker, a recent arrival from the North of England, has replaced Mr. Vessey as leader of the Adventurers on Mr. Vessey’s removal from the district, with Mrs. Shelton as his assistant. Mrs. Bonnett now leads the primary in which Mrs. MacDonald also helps. We are grateful that although we could use considerably more help, at least we have sufficient.
In the Primary department, progress is being maintained and although several children have transferred to Adventurers, there are now 24 on the roll. The younger children now meet with Mrs. MacDonald in the vestry. Adventurers, which meets on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings, has an average of 18 though not entirely the same group come regularly to both. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Adventurers are girls (only 4 boys on the roll), whilst this may be an advantage for teaching purposes, it does not augur well for the future. However, if too many boys were to arrive this would overwhelm the facilities. Clearly a problem. The majority of children attend regularly and although there is a wide age difference, this does not seem to be a problem. Only a few have a good knowledge of the bible. A lack of a pianist for the Sunday morning is another problem still to be solved.
The Young People’s Fellowship has grown in numbers – there are now 30 on the roll. Numbers are encouraging but can present difficulties when space and leadership are limited. The main problem is the great differences in bible knowledge and spiritual awareness in the very active group. This presents difficulties in teaching, but lack of space on Fridays also poses problems in keeping the group actively occupied. However, we must be glad that recently friends (boy/girl) have been brought and almost all come fairly regularly on Sundays. Much prayer and patience will be needed in the future if members of this very promising crowd are to become Christians and grow up into the fellowship of the Church. Before leaving the young people’s work we must not forget to mention the Young People’s Week-end at which Rev. Paul Bishop was again the speaker.
Turning to the wider ministry of the church, we were disappointed that Mr. Lewis Mann felt unable to lead the work here, but we are all very grateful to God for the continuing ministry of Mr. Bonnett as lay minister. His ministry entered the fourth year last November when Mr. Mann conducted his Anniversary Services. We would like to express our thankfulness for the leadership of the Church over the past year. The great deal of time given so unsparingly by Mr. and Mrs. Bonnett in the service of the church is something of which not all of us will be fully aware.
The year has also seen the passing of one of our active members – Mrs. Purton. Mrs. Purton became a member in 1954 and has been a great source of strength to many over the years, particularly in the Women’s Own, where she assisted Mrs. Bonnett in the leadership. Her presence will be sorely missed by us all.
We are very grateful to all the others who help in a multitude of ways – to Mr. Purton, who with his wife until her recent death, has undertaken the caretaking of the Church. To Mrs. Techwyn Jones who plays the organ so well and is there each Sunday at 10.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. almost without fail. To Mr. Techwyn Jones, who sees that the Church premises do not fall down, to Miss Dell and Miss Mayo who collect for B.M.S. under the birthday scheme. They report 25 members as last year and gifts in excess of £10. There are also those who arrange flowers, those who steward and many others who assist in other ways. To them all and to all leaders and helpers in organisations, the church is grateful, and yet all of us I am sure do not really need to be thanked as we are only too glad to be able to serve the Lord in these many ways.
So much for the past, what of the future?
Recently we have all become increasingly aware of the need to attract adults to the church, for if we do not and other Christians do not move into the area, our numbers will surely fall. Whilst we recognise that this is God’s work and not ours, nevertheless we have been commanded by God to “Go and preach the gospel”. We must take up this challenge, possibly in new ways and with a new sense of purpose and a firm faith that God will accomplish His work through us. Let us not be afraid of new things, but let us not forget the old, old story of Jesus and His love for people.
When I wrote my report a year ago I concluded “Our God is able to do more than we can ask or think. May we learn to ask great things of God and to expect great things from God”. Now as we face another year I enquire “have we asked?” or if we have asked, “do we really expect?” God is able – let us humble expect Him to act as we ask in faith.
[Alan Dyer, Secretary’s Report March 1969]
Minutes of Church Meeting held on 22nd April 1969
Present. Mr. Bonnett (Chairman) & 13 church members.
In the absence of Mr. Bonnett Mr. Dyer opened the meeting with prayer & bible reading.
Minutes The minutes of meetings held on 10th December 1968 & 11th March 1969 were read confirmed and signed by Mr Dyer, acting as chairman.
Mid Week Activity
Mr Dyer outlined to the church the deacons recommendation that the mid week bible study & prayer meeting should from the autumn be held on alternate Tuesdays only. On the other Tuesdays home discussion groups should be started at say three homes to which neighbours, parents & friends be invited. This would be an attempt at indirect evangelism in which all could play their part by inviting others to the homes concerned. A syllabus of discussions would be followed with a view to implanting the truths of the Christian faith.
After some discussion the suggestion was unanimously approved.
Press & Publicity Officer Mr. Bonnett outlined a further suggestion from the deacons that a publicity officer be appointed to publicise future activities & report on other events. Mr. Barker was proposed to undertake this task for an initial period of one year. The church unanimously approved the appointment.
Sunday Services It was reported by Mr. Bonnett that in the autumn a definite syllabus was planned for the Sunday morning services, the speaker at which would be himself on the majority of Sundays sharing occasionally with Mr. Dyer & one or two other members. The evening service would then be conducted more by those outside the fellowship. The morning service would also include others taking part particularly the children & young people. It was also probable that visual aids would be used on a regular basis.
There was no other business.

22nd July 1969
Minutes of Special Church Meeting held on 22nd April 1969
Present Mr Bonnett (Chairman) 13 church members.
The minutes of the last special church meeting held on 14th May 1968 were read, confirmed & signed by the Chairman.
Grant from Homework Fund At the request of the Chairman Mr Dyer reported on negotiations which Mr. Bonnett & himself had had with the area Superintendent Rev Hicks & the diaconate with Rev. Turner the area Secretary, concerning the possibility of a grant from the Homework Fund. The Secretary, Mr Dyer, explained that any application from a church to have any possibility of success it must be supported first by the Area Superintendent & secretary & then by the area Committee & finally be approved by the Baptist Union. After two very lengthy informal meetings both these gentlemen were prepared to support such an application by the church. Both had explored the position very thoroughly including the possibility of a joint ministry with Berkhamsted Baptist but appeared convinced of the need & possibilities at Northchurch. It was therefore now for the church to formally apply if they thought fit.
Mr. Dyer stated that the church would have to make considerable sacrifices if it were to call a minister even if a grant were forthcoming. It was estimated that appart from accommodation the cost of the ministry could be up to £500 after allowing for the grant & in addition accommodation would be required. In the past two/three years considerable sums had been spent on church buildings which would probably not need to be repeated & this combined with a surplus in 1968 & savings on the expense of pulpit supplies could give £200/£250 towards the additional monies required. However this would still mean that we would need to increase our weekly offerings by up to 100 per cent. If however a single man were called the increase might be less particularly if accommodation could be found in a member or friends home.
In discussion members generally welcomed the proposal whilst recognising the responsibilities involved. Mention was made of the possibility of a joint ministry with Berkhamsted but it was agreed it was not practical at this time.
It was unanimously resolved therefore that
(1) Recognising the privilege of having a minister and that our first responsibility as Church members is the maintenance of the Ministry, we resolve (a) That application be made to the Home Work Fund for a grant to enable us to pay the minimum stipend (b) That the amount stated below is the money we can offer towards a stipend (c) That we endeavour to increase our portion of the stipend by at least 10% each year.
(2) For 12 months from January 1970 we offer £375 towards the stipend and £50 for expenses.
There was no other business, the meeting closed with prayer.

3rd June 1969
Minutes of Special Church Meeting held on Tuesday June 3rd 1969
Present. Mr. Dyer. Chairman & 17 church members.
The meeting opened with hymn, prayer & bible reading.
Apologies Mr. Dyer conveyed to the meeting the apologies for absence from Mr. Mrs. Bonnett and Mr & Mrs. MacDonald both of whom were on holiday.
Minutes The minutes of the special church meeting held on 22nd April 1969 were read, confirmed & signed by the chairman.
Pastorate The chairman outlined the steps which had lead to the convening of the meeting. He then gave as many details as he was aware of the ministry of Dr. Hodge first in England, then for 35 years in New Zealand & finally for 6 months at Welwyn Baptist Church. Mr. Dyer reported on his telephone conversation with the secretary of that church.
Details were also given of the reasons for Dr. Hodge wishing to return to England & to take over the pastorate of a church in Hertfordshire. Every report on Dr. Hodge indicated that both he & his wife would be ideally suited for the situation at Northchurch & we would be highly privileged if a call from the church were accepted. The church had been praying about the pastorate for many months & the deacons were firmly of the opinion that the possibility of Dr. Hodge accepting the pastorate was an answer to prayer.
Mr. Dyer also read a letter from Mr. Bonnett which fully supported the deacons view that Dr. Hodge be invited to accept the pastorate. Mention was made that Dr. Hodge would find his own accommodation but no Homework Fund Grant would be available as (a) Dr Hodge was not affiliated to the Baptist Union of Great Britain & Ireland (he wished to remain with the Baptist Union of New Zealand for the time being) & (b) no grants were made from the Homework Fund when a person reached 72 years of age. Mr. Dyer stressed the need for the church to accept the financial commitment involved in the deacons proposal which was that £500 be paid by way of salary & expenses. The deacons hoped that not only would this sum be met but more would be forthcoming so that at a future date this amount could be increased.
After some discussion it was unanimously agreed to invite Rev. Alexander Hodge B.A.B.D. PhD to accept the pastorate of the church for an initial period of 3 years. Dr Hodge to be paid a total of £500 per. Annum by way of salary & expenses, the division of this sum between the two items to be agreed with the deacons.*
Mr. Vessey & Mr. Barker then commended the outcome of the decision to the Lord in prayer, at the same time remembering Dr. Hodge & his wife.
The meeting closed with a hymn & benediction.
* Following the proposal, Mr. Dyer mentioned how much the church owed to Mr. & Mrs. Bonnett for their leadership & it was agreed that if Dr. Hodge accepted the call, an informal meeting following an evening service should be used as an occasion to express the thanks of the church.

21st September 1971
[Dr Hodge accepted the invitation and his Induction Service took place in September 1969. He was the last Minister at Northchurch Baptist regularly to preach wearing robes. He was already in his 70’s when he came to Northchurch. His brother in law, Rev T.D. Robinson was Minister at Aylesbury and his son in law, Rev A.V. Matthews, Minister at Hertford Baptist in 1969].
Minutes of Church Meeting held on 22nd July 1969
Present. Mr. C.F. Bonnett (Chairman) & 12 church members.
The meeting opened with hymn, prayer & bible reading.
Minutes The minutes of the previous church meeting held on 22nd April 1969 were read, confirmed & signed by the Chairman.
Matters Arising Mr. Bonnett reported that the proposed change of form of the Sunday morning service would not now take place in view of the call of Dr. Hodge to the pastorate. It was proposed however to proceed with the change of plan for Tuesday evenings. The first Tuesday meeting after the August break would be held in the church hall on September 9th. At this meeting it was proposed to discuss the new fortnightly home discussion groups & outline how these would operate. The first meeting in the homes would take place on September 16th.
Induction of Dr. Hodge The secretary reported on the arrangements that had been made for the Induction on September 20th.[1969] Rev. Arthur Matthews of Hertford would be Chairman, Rev. Douglas Hicks, area superintendent, would perform the induction & speak. Tea had been arranged to follow. The secretary stressed the need for prayer & enthusiasm at the time of change.
Finance Mr. MacDonald reported on the balances in the various church funds & remarked on the increase in Sunday Offerings which average this year over £10 p. week. However there was a need for a further considerable increase in order to meet our commitment to Dr. Hodge.
Repairs Mention was made of the repairs to toilets which Mr. Axtell was currently carrying out & of the need for a window which opened in the vestry toilet. It was hoped this window would be installed during August. It was agreed that on Friday evenings in August working parties would be held at the church.
Adventurers Mr. Bonnett reported that it was proposed to divide the Adventurers into two groups, probably the elder group would be called Senior Adventurers & would consist of 1st & 2nd forms of senior schools. The younger group aged eight to eleven would be known as Adventurers. It was proposed that both groups should meet together on Sunday, only dividing for the talks, but the Senior Group would have a separate games evening, probably on a Monday. This proposal was agreed as also the proposal that Mr. Bonnett should lead the senior group helped by Mrs. Barker.
The church secretary mentioned the need for accommodation on a Sunday morning now that the Institute was closing down. [The Institute was in Bell Lane opposite the church building. It is now a private house].
Future Events The secretary reported that the harvest festival would be held on September 28th, & Missionary Sunday on October 26th, when Rev. Richard Henlow would be the speaker. Young Peoples Fellowship Hours would follow both of the services, in the evening. It was hoped that these services would be particularly for Young People. Secretary’s Report 1970
In concluding my report last year I enquired whether we as a fellowship really expected God to act in our midst.
If you recall it was about a year ago that Mr. Lewis Mann, whom we had been hoping might lead the ministry of the church; accepted a call to another church and we were all wondering whether the leadership problem would be solved on the retirement of Mr. Bonnett. Yet within three month’s of last year’s annual meeting God had acted and Dr. Hodge had accepted the call to the pastorate of the church. How grateful we are for our prayers being answered and also for the courage and devotion of Dr. and Mrs. Hodge in leaving New Zealand to help us in our work here.
The induction of Dr. Hodge was not only the highlight of the year but also unique in the history of the church for as we know no ordained minister had previously been called solely to lead the work of this church.[*] Here was a wonderful way in which God had intervened in an unusual but direct way into the history of this fellowship. Since the induction in September there can be no doubt of God’s call. There has been an increased interest by members of the fellowship and an added awareness of Gods presence amongst us.
We were glad to welcome our friends from New Zealand but we were also very happy that Mr. and Mrs. Bonnett who had lead the church for about four years would be continuing to help with the work. We must record our thanks to them for their inspiring leadership in a crucial period in the life of the church, and there was no happier occasion in the past year than when we said “thank you” to them at a Fellowship Hour in September.
The membership of the church at 31st December was the same as the previous year – thirty-eight, but is now over forty (the highest for some years) and we trust that it will not be long before many more join us. In the childrens work progress is being made although the primary numbers were subsequently down on a year ago with the transfer of several children to the Adventurers last September. However, the regular attendance is very good and the children lively and interested. Mrs. Bonnett is sure that the experiment of diving [dividing] the children into two groups for their story and activity work proved to be satisfactory, and this is now normal practice, the pre-school age children being taken by Mrs. MacDonald. The younger children benefit from more individual attention and teaching material suitable for their age.
In the Adventurers, a major change took place in September with the creation of the Senior Group lead by Mr. Bonnett – meeting on a Monday evening. This move has helped to interest the older Adventurers and to increase numbers overall but numbers have been going up well recently also. The total on the role is now over forty and a record attendance of thirty seven was recorded recently (the record in the previous year was twenty-two). The problem reported last year of a shortage of boys still persists. There are only seven on the role and none are Seniors. The only remedy appears to be a separate section for boys and this would improve the size of sections for teaching also. There is no leader available to allow this immediately. Otherwise generally progress is satisfactory and Adventurers is a happy group which is certainly being taught, even if not learning, the Gospel.
The Young Peoples Fellowship has seen a fall in numbers during the year, but there is now an increasing interest in spiritual matters with a few of the young people. With smaller numbers the leaders feel more lasting progress is likely to be made. Undoubtedly one or two of the Y.P.F. are now Christians and the leaders are praying that they will in due course confess their faith in baptism. Recently practically all the young people have commenced the Duke of Edinburgh Award either at Bronze or Silver level. This has proved of undoubted value in retaining their interest although whether all will complete the Award is doubtful.
Last May Mr. Liddelow conducted our Children’s and Young People’s Sunday. It was a wonderful day for children, young people and adults alike and all will remember the messages so vividly expressed.
Mrs. Bonnett reports that the Womens side of the work has enjoyed a satisfactory and worthwhile year. I am sure we are all aware that for some while the Womens Own have been affiliated to the Baptist Womens League and they have valued the help received from the wider organisation. At the recent Annual Meeting Mrs. Hodge was welcomed as the President of Womens Own. The regular weekly devotional meetings have been appreciated, and thanks are due to the many speakers who serve us in this way. Highlights of the year include the Women’s Sunday service conducted by Mrs. Matthews of Hertford last April, and visits to the Rallies of the Herts Federation of the B.W.L., when it was such an encouragement to join with women from all over the county. Special mention must be made of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Albert Hall last May, which a number of our members were privileged to attend. We also joined with the members of Berkhamsted Baptist Women’s Own in a visit to the Haven (the Baptist Union home for unmarried mothers).
The Young Wives Fellowship would appear to have settled into a worthwhile activity of the Church. The average attendance is higher and more consistent. Members seem to appreciate the informality and friendly atmosphere of the meetings.
One problem that continually crops up for discussion is the question of the name of the organisation, which is felt by some to be inappropriate and does not cover the age range.
The programme continues to cover a wide variety of subjects and activities, but always with the aim of presenting Christ and the Church.
The church continues to have a missionary interest, although not so great as many would wish. The Rev. Richard Harbour was an outstanding speaker at our Missionary Sunday and the gifts on that occasion were again higher than the previous year. Miss Mayo reports that the B.M.S. Birthday Scheme now has twenty nine members and we sent £12 to the B.M.S. in October. Miss Dell and Miss Mayo wish to thank all members and would be pleased to have names of any others who would like to join.
Once again I would express thanks to all who have helped this year in the service of the church. We are so fortunate to have within our small group of members so many who in such a variety of ways help in the work for the Lord. Those who help with the cleaning, repair and improvement of the church, those who help with the musical side, those who arrange flowers, those who deal with financial matters, and those who by week lead and help with the childrens, young peoples and womens work. I am sure that none of you really require thanking as all give willingly to the One who has given all for them.
We all realise that progress in the past twelve months has been made generally. We now have an ordained minister and a most important step that is. We have started discussion groups to reach out to others, but the overall progress is only a fraction of what we all feel is needed; a means of making the Christian faith which is so real and vital to us, relevant to our neighbours and those around the church. How can we accomplish this task – may I suggest four ways:-
First by prayer, individually, as families, and as a fellowship. We do pray, but do we pray enough, not only at church, but also at home?
Secondly, by the Church Services - we try to invite others, but perhaps we ought to be considering the types of service we hold as well.
Thirdly, through the Church’s activities, particularly the Children’s and Young People’s Work. Here is one sphere where progress is being made.
Fourth, by ourselves talking to others. Perhaps this year not only by further discussion groups, but also in other ways we might talk to others of the faith we enjoy.
Whilst we know that being a Christian makes a difference to our lives, and whilst we know that the presence of Christ gives us confidence in our daily living, how loathe we are and how incapable we are of explaining this to others.
May God help us this year, not only through prayer, but also by our action, to affect the lives of the people of the town in which God has set us.

Membership (a) Mrs Lucas & her daughter Joy Mrs Bonnett reported on a meeting she, & Mrs Barker had with Mrs Lucas & Joy. Both had formerly been members of Cranbrook Road Baptist Church Ilford but this membership had lapsed as they had moved away from Ilford seven years previously. However Mrs Bonnett had no hesitation in recommending them for membership on their profession of faith in Christ, this view was supported by Mrs Barker. On this recommendation the meeting unanimously agreed Mrs Lucas & Miss Joy Lucas be welcomed as members.
(b) Miss Elaine Medlock The secretary reported that Miss Medlock who had been worshipping with us for some while wished to transfer her membership from Oakwood Park Baptist Church to this church. Her transfer had been warmly commended by the secretary of Oakwood Park & the meeting unanimously agreed to welcome Miss Medlock as a member.
Church Wall The Secretary reported that the insurance claim in respect of the church wall had now been agreed & £675 received. It was agreed to proceed with a temporary repair in view of the fact that road widening might occur in the very near future.
Gift of Land Mention was made of the gift of land at the rear of the church, to the church by Mr. Skidmore. This gift of a small area would enable a path to be built at the rear of the church. It was unanimously agreed that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr. Skidmore who did not wish at this stage to bother with any transfer deed.

[On 11 October 1970 Cliff Richard visited NBC, singing and talking in the evening service and afterwards answering the questions put by young people (aged 14-30) in a special session in the church hall. This visit was set up by Alan Dyer and was the first of two. Cliff at that time was supporting the work of TEAR Fund (The Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund)]

Minutes of Church Meeting held on 20th October 1970
Present Dr. Alex Hodge (Chairman) & 9 church members.
Minutes The minutes of the last meeting were read, confirmed & signed by the chairman.
Matters Arising Dr. Hodge reported that it had not been possible as yet to welcome Miss. Joy Lucas into membership but he hoped to do so on the first Sunday in November.
Church Cleaning The Secretary reported that Mr. Purton was anticipating going into hospital & felt unable to continue to clean the church at least for the time being. Mr. Tecwyn Jones had arranged a rota of church members.
Council of Churches Mr. Bonnett reported that an evangelism sub-committee had been appointed by the Council of Churches to arrange in 1971 a month of outreach “to proclaim the good news …. of Jesus Christ”. He was secretary of the Sub Committee which had now planned for May next year a week of activities to be arranged by each of the churches but also to include within the week two joint meetings, one on the Friday for Youth & the other on Saturday of wider appeal. This week would be preceded by a fortnights visitation. It was agreed to send £10 to the Council of Churches to help finance the project which would be known as AD71.
Finance The treasurer reported on the balances in the various funds & remarked that the church had just received Income Tax repayments on covenanted gifts of approx. £90.
Future Events The Secretary mentioned future events. Some discussion took place on the Guest Service arranged for Nov. 15th, when the Chairman suggested that some students of theology visiting the town might take part. As nothing was known of these students & the purpose of the visit was to talk on “the ministry as a Christian Vocation” it was generally thought inappropriate to invite them.
General pleasure was expressed that Rev. Bernard Hughes of St. Marys would conduct our evening service on December 13th.
The meeting closed in prayer lead by the Chairman.

[So at the end of 1970 the fellowship is poised. Its membership is growing, with younger couples and single people providing willing workers. Its young people’s work is beginning to bear fruit and there are enough children to be split up into more appropriate age ranges. It has appointed an ordained minister for the first time in the 20th century, building on the firm foundations laid by Cliff Bonnett as lay pastor and there are signs of renewed evangelistic activity both within NBC and across the town as a whole.
Yet there is still the threat hanging over the church from the planners, that the church building may need to be demolished to allow a major road widening of the A41!]

7.3.72
Secretary’s Report 1971 When coming to prepare my report this year I wonder what has happened in the past year in this church that has not happened previously, certainly in recent history. I find it very difficult to discover new things or new thinking. Perhaps this is indicative not only of the state of this church but also of the church of Christ generally in this land. We all realise how difficult it is to interest our neighbours in the truth of God and yet how slow we are to meet them in a way they can understand whilst at the same time losing nothing of the force of the Gospel.
However there have been some changes in the past year the most notable being in the childrens work where the activities were divided between boys and girls, the girls being further divided between Juniors and Seniors.
Miss Medlock, immediately she joined the church in June, became the leader of the junior girl section and with the help of Mrs Shelton has run Friday and Sunday activities. She tells us that when the junior group started there were then approximately 24 girls. The summer months were spent out in various activities such as swimming, rambling, wild flower competitions, rounders and treasure hunts. In September most of the group went into Senior Adventurers leaving a very small nucleus of loyal members. Activities were varied during the winter months – games evenings, beetle drives, quizzes, handcrafts. Three parties were held, Halloween, Guy Fawkes and Christmas. After Christmas numbers increased to 16. There is a small loyal nucleus, the rest come and go.
In the senior girls section Mr Barker reports that since the separation they have become more and more a distinct group. There is hardly any association with the junior girls or boys except for special Saturday events and a monthly combined class on Sundays which is not popular with the seniors. The separation is not a bad thing and may even smooth the progression to YPF. There are 18 members but Sunday attendance is generally 50-75% only. Some incentives to improve attendance are being considered. The Sunday class is held in the Leader’s house and this is quite acceptable as teaching aids such as gramophone and projector can be used without disturbing other classes. Mr Barker adds the girls have got wet only about three times in the year on our Church to Class journey. The Monday night clubs have varied from talks on fashion to knitting blankets for refugees. Generally it has been a satisfactory year and although their Bible knowledge is not good most of the girls do know what the Christian faith is all about.
Mr Bonnett who leads the Boy Adventurers with Mrs Standing’s help tells us that during the summer months the activities out of doors included cricket, swimming, treasure hunts, football and a very successful trip to the fire station. In September the Tuesday evening meetings restarted in the church hall. The boys were divided into two groups with a four weekly competition for the best group and the leading boy in each group. Each Tuesday evening has a theme and all the games and activities are arranged around the theme. Attendance on Tuesday is conditional upon regular attendance at the Sunday morning meeting. Up to the end of the year the average attendance both on Sundays and Tuesdays was twelve. Mr Bonnett asks for your prayers. There are many counter attractions, particularly on Sunday mornings and we have lost several boys to the local ‘Junior Dynamos’ football team who practice and play on Sunday mornings.
In the womens section too there has been a recent change – in 1970 we had a Young Wives Fellowship, now there is the Wednesday Group. Mrs Bonnett writes that it was felt that by changing the name from ‘Young Wives’ we should widen our scope, and cater for all ladies wishing to attend an evening meeting. As from January this year, the meeting became known as ‘The Wednesday Group’, with a gratifying increase in numbers and benefit to the meeting. Generally the meeting has enjoyed a satisfactory year. Efforts have been made to co-ordinate the work amongst the ladies in the church, and members of the evening group have been encouraged to take part in special events , such as the Women’s Sunday, and the garden party held at the home of Dr and Mrs Hodge. A more recent innovation has been to arrange ‘At Home’ evenings during the winter months, and so far these have proved most successful.
One of the young wives, Mrs Dyer was elected President of the ladies section of the Berkhamsted area of the British and Foreign Bible Society and is having an active year.
In the other section of the women’s work, the Women’s Own, have had a most encouraging year with increased membership which has resulted in an increase of enthusiasm and vitality in the meeting. Member have joined in special church events and also attended activities arranged by the Baptist Womens League. There was also the Women’s Sunday service last April conducted by Mrs Hodge, and a most successful garden party held at the home of Dr and Mrs Hodge in July, when the sum of £28 was raised for the Baptist Home Work Fund. More recently the Annual New Year lunch was much enjoyed by everyone. Thanks are due to the members who help to keep the meeting running smoothly. We should all thank Mrs Bonnett for the part she plays in the whole of the womens work, indeed it is difficult to see how it could operate without her.
Switching our attention back to another of Mrs Bonnett’s activities, in the primary department there are at present 19 children on the register. This is a slight decrease on last year’s figures, mainly due to the number of children transferred to the Adventurer’s Department last September. Attendance is satisfactory and the children in the main are interested and eager to participate. The division between the Primary and Beginners age groups continues to work well, and there is room for more children particularly in the lower age group. There would seem to be a tendency towards a drop in attendance of children at special Family Services. This is probably mainly due to circumstances outside our control, such as the growing habit of families going away for holiday weekends, e.g., Easter, but may also be partially due to the unwillingness of small children to sit through a full length church service.
The Young Peoples Fellowship has had an active year, eight of the members gained the Duke of Edinburghs award at Bronze level and there are now twelve attempting the award at Silver level. A house-party held over Whitsun in Wales was a time of much spiritual blessing but the young people still continue to express an interest in spiritual matters without committing themselves to Christ. Much prayer is needed for them for the times in which we live are not easy. There are now 15 girls but only 4 boys in the group who now not only meet on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings but also have a discussion hour at Domus, Winston Gardens, each Sunday evening.
What then of the wider work of the church. Has any progress been made during the past twelve months. Membership now numbers 45 a net increase of 5, perhaps not many but a 12½% increase in the year. If this percentage increase were repeated each year for five years from now our numbers would be over 80, and in 10 years almost 150.
Last year at the meeting Dr Hodge mentioned the need for regular prayer. The prayer meeting has been a little better attended but numbers remain small on average about 7/8 each week. However we are confident that God hears and answers.
The congregations on Sunday too have shown an improvement not only when special guest services have been arranged, but also on a week to week basis.
Out missionary interest is limited but Miss Mayo reports that we now have 35 members in the Baptist Missionary Fund Birthday Scheme, last year only 29. We sent to the B.M.S. £15.50 for the year ending October 1970, which was a £3.50 increase on the previous year. Miss Dell and Miss Mayo thank all concerned for their subscriptions. At our Missionary Weekend over £125 was given and our gifts to the Homework Fund have increased considerably this year.
One further change during the year was forced upon us when through ill health Mr Purton had to relinquish the church caretaking. We would all like to express our very sincere thanks to him for his help so unsparingly given. Thanks too to all who now clean the church week by week.
We continue to be very grateful for all the help that is given by others in the work of the church, to Mr Tecwyn Jones who keeps the church in good repair and to his wife who fills the church with music every Sunday, to those who arrange the flowers, to Mr Parry for the improvements he has made in our fittings, and to all others who whether looking after finance or giving out bible reading aids enrich our fellowship.
May I mention one final change during the year, the amount of the weekly giving to church funds. When Dr and Mrs Hodge joined us we mentioned the needs and it has been a tremendous encouragement to me to see how the challenge has been met. Dr Hodge has kindly relieved us of a portion or [of] our responsibility but if we are to meet the future challenge further increases in our giving will be needed.
Finally and perhaps most important of all in reporting on the past year may I say how greatly we have been encouraged by the weekly ministry of Dr Hodge, a ministry which has continually challenged and stimulated us all. It has been a great pleasure to enjoy his good humoured leadership throughout the church and we continue to praise God for sending he and his wife to us. We trust that not only are they happy here with us but that the Lord will greatly encourage them in their work during the coming year.
That was the past what is there to come. The apostle reminds us that without Christ we can do nothing. How easy to be so busy in our activity that we forget the objective, or so regular in our church going that we do not realise that Gods ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts our thoughts. Can we ask more than that God may be graciously pleased to enable us to know His mind so that we may be truly effective as we meet the challenge of today.

The Pastorate and Home Mission Fund The Chairman explained in detail the reasons for calling the meeting and referred particularly to the action that had been taken and the discussions he had had with the Area Superintendent, Rev Douglas Hicks, on the future of the pastorate of the church. He read a letter that he had received from Dr Hodge tendering his resignation from the pastorate of the church as from 31.12.71. Dr Hodge was of the opinion that it would facilitate the application that the church would be considering making to the Baptist Union Home Mission Fund if there was a ministerial vacancy.
Mr Dyer went onto explain the action which was required by the church in making an application to the Home Mission Fund and also the commitment that the church would be entering into if the application were approved. He stressed, however, that the church was only being asked to consider, and, if agreed, give approval to an application being made, there was no question of the church entering into any financial commitment at this juncture.
The Chairman referred to two students, one from Spurgeons College and one from the London Bible College, who would be preaching in our church in the autumn and asked members to bear the future pastorate in mind when the young men visited us.
It was also explained that for an application to the Home Mission Fund to be approved the church would have to provide a manse for its minister.
Mr McDonald explained the financial implications that would result from the calling of a man to the ministry including the provision of a manse and felt that these could be met from the church, although we would need increased giving. The treasurer stressed the need for more gifts.
After a full discussion had taken place, Mr Dyer read the resolutions required by the Home Mission Fund in support of an application which were:-
1) Recognising the privilege of having a minister and that our first responsibility as Church Members is the maintenance of the Ministry, we resolve:
a) That application be made to the Fund for a grant to enable us to pay the minimum stipend;
b) That the amount stated below is the most we can after [offer] towards the stipend;
c) That we endeavour to increase our portion of the stipend by at least 10% each year.
2) For this current year (1971) this Church is paying £250 towards the stipend and ministerial expenses.
3) For 12 months from January 1972 we offer £420 towards the stipend and £50 for expenses.
Mr T Jones proposed and Mr C Bonnett seconded the resolution which was approved with one member abstaining, all the remainder being in favour.
There was no other business.

28th October 1971
Minutes of the Special Church meeting held on 28th October, 1971
Present Mr Dyer (Chairman) and 21 Church Members present. The meeting opened with a hymn, bible reading and prayer.
Previous Minutes The minutes of the last special church meeting were read, confirmed and signed by the Chairman.
Pastorate and Home Mission Fund Mr Dyer reported on the meeting between the deacons and two representatives, appointed by the Herts Baptist Association to visit the diaconate in connection with our application to the Baptist Union Home Mission Fund. He also said that the application had been lodged in the prescribed manner and it seemed probable that we would know the result of the application by the end of the year.
Referring to the resignation of Dr Hodge Mr Dyer said that the deacon[s] had asked Dr Hodge to stay on as pastor at least until 31st March, 1972. Dr Hodge had agreed to do this on the understanding that if he received a call from another church he would be free to leave before 31st March. The last Sunday in March would be celebrated as the Church Anniversary and it was hoped that Dr Hodge would lead the anniversary service.
The Chairman mentioned the visit of Mr Pullen and the forthcoming visit of Mr Tidball. It was generally felt that Mr Pullen should be invited to preach in the church again but without in any way committing us or him to the pastorate. A motion to this effect from the Chair was unanimously agreed.
A special church meeting was arranged for 23.11.71 to consider the Pastorate.
Future Events were mentioned as follows:- 31.10.71 Missionary Sunday – Rev and Mrs Matthews 21.11.71 Guest Night 28.11.71 Young Peoples Service – Judy MacKenzie 11.12.71 Carols for the Family 19.12.71 Candlelight Service 25.12.71 Family Service
The meeting had a time of prayer during which several members took part.
There being no further business the meeting sang a hymn after which the Chairman pronounced the benediction.

Minutes of the Special Church Meeting held on 23rd November, 1971
Present Mr Dyer (Chairman) and eighteen Church Members present. The meeting opened with a hymn, bible reading and prayer.
Previous Minutes The minutes of the last special church meeting were read and confirmed and were then signed by the chairman.
Anniversary Service Dr Hodge had intimated to Mr Dyer that he would prefer the Anniversary Service to be celebrated after 31st March next year.
Pastorate The Chairman made a full verbal report to the meeting on the present situation concerning the pastorate and in particular mentioned the following points:-
a) Our application to the Baptist Union Home Mission Fund had been approved by the HBA. The appropriate committee of the Baptist Union Home Mission Fund would meet on 2nd December when our application would be dealt with.
b) Mr Pullen would be preaching in our church again on 12th December without any commitment by him in the church. The morning service would be a family service.
c) Mr Dyer then spoke about Mr Tidball, referring to his background his call to the ministry and his training at the London Bible College. He also mentioned that although only a second year student he had been elected senior student at L.B.C. Mr Tidball had stated that he hoped to continue his studies in order to obtain a PLD. Mr Tidball was a member of the Council of the Youth for Christ – Great Britain organisation. The meeting was advised that the deacons would be meeting Mr Tidball on Monday 29th November and would make a report to the church in due course.
d) In response to a question Mr Dyer said that whilst it might not be necessary to provide a manse for a single minister, it was his view that the church should go ahead and purchase a house next year in view of the constant increase in the price of property. This was a personal view however and the matter had not yet been considered by the deacons.
Pulpit Supplies Mr Dyer referred to the need for pulpit supplies from April next year and asked church members to advise him or any of the deacons the name of any suitable speakers for consideration.
Next Meeting A special church meeting was provisionally arranged for 21st December.
Future Events Members were reminded of the following future events 28.11.71 Young Peoples Service – Judy MacKenzie 11.12.71 Carols for the Family 19.12.71 Candlelight Service 25.12.71 Family Service 30.4.72 Young Peoples Day – Peter Liddelow

Minutes of the Special Church Meeting held on 21st December, 1971
Present Mr Dyer (Chairman) and twenty Church Members present. The meeting opened with a hymn, bible reading and prayer.
Apologies Apologies for absence were received from Mr & Mrs T Jones, and Mr & Mrs Barker.
Previous Minutes The minutes of the previous special church meeting were read, approved and signed by the Chairman.
Pastorate Mr Dyer reported on the progress to date and in particular mentioned the following matters:-
a) A letter had been received from the B.U.H.M.F. confirming that a grant would be made for 5 years, This would be subject to special review after 3 years. The chairman referred to the support that the Rev Douglas Hicks, Area Superintendent, had given to our application both in the H.B.A. and the H.M.F. Councils.
b) It was a condition of the grant that any minister accepting a call to the pastorate would have to be approved by the B.U. but not necessarily on the B.U. list of ministers.
c) The deacons were unanimous in their belief that a call to the pastorate should be extended to Mr Tidball, who had recently preached in the church and with whom the deacons had subsequently met. The deacons considered Mr Tidball to be an outstanding man, one eminently suited to the situation at Northchurch. The therefore recommended this course of action. After discussion and comment it was proposed by Mr Parry, seconded by Mr Bonnett and unanimously agreed, to extend to Mr Tidball a call to the pastorate at Northchurch on the following terms: ‘Subject to approval of the Baptist Union, Mr Derek Tidball be invited to Become Minister of the Church for an initial period of five years to commence in September 1972. The salary paid would be a the minimum provided by the Home Mission Fund towards which the Church would make its agreed contribution.’
d) The following resolution required by the Baptist Home Mission Fund in respect of the grant for year 1973 was unanimously approved:
The Ministry:
1) Recognising the privilege of having a minister (or deaconess) and that our first responsibility as Church Members is the maintenance of the Ministry, we resolve:
a) That application be made to the Fund for a grant to enable us to pay the minimum stipend;
b) That the amount stated below is the most we can after [offer] towards the stipend;
c) That we endeavour to increase our portion of the stipend by at least 10% each year.
2) For the year 1972 this Church has offered £450 towards the stipend and £50 for ministerial expenses. This will be implemented when a full-time minister approved by the Home Mission Fund is appointed.
3) For the 12 months from January 1973 we offer £450 towards the stipend and £50 for expenses.
Mr Dyer asked that the question of a manse be left for the deacon[s] to discuss who would then bring a recommendation to the church.
Concluding the matter of the pastorate, Mr Dyer mentioned the need for all members of the Church to consider how they can help more fully in the life and witness of the church in terms of finance, service and, especially, prayer. The meeting had a time of prayer in which several members took part. The meeting closed with a hymn and the benediction.

18th January 1972
Minutes of the Special Church Meeting held on 18th January, 1972
Present Mr Dyer (Chairman) and nineteen Church members present. The meeting opened with a hymn, bible reading and prayer.
Previous Minutes The minutes of the previous Special Church Meeting were read and approved and were then signed by the Chairman.
Pastorate Mr Dyer reported on the present position concerning the call to the ministry of Northchurch of Mr D Tidball. He mentioned particularly the following points:-
a) Mr Tidball had been invited to accept a part-time position as Director of Evangelism at a theological college. [It was London Bible College]
b) The Baptist Union were prepared to place Mr Tidball on their approved list of ministers although he would not, strictly speaking, fulfil the requirements of the Baptist Union by virtue of holding another part-time job.
c) The Home Mission fund would also still make a grant to the Church to help in support of Mr Tidball.
d) Mr Dyer emphasised that if Mr Tidball accepted the call to the pastorate he would quite definitely consider the Ministry at Northchurch as his prime responsibility.
e) The governors of the college were meeting on Friday, 21st January and Mr Dyer hoped that he would receive early indication whether the college would be agreeable to Mr Tidball being pastor at Northchurch in addition to being Director of Evangelism at the college.
After comment and discussion it was unanimously agreed to affirm the call of Mr Tidball to the pastorate, but there would need to be a further Special Church Meeting to approve the exact terms when these had been worked out by all parties.
Manse The Chairman referred to the letter that had been sent to all members outlining the financial commitment the Church would have to enter into in order to purchase a Manse.
Mr T Jones reported that it was possible that certain of the monies received in respect of a wall in front of the Church might be available to help towards the cost of the proposed manse.
In response to a question Mr Dyer said that the deacons had not yet discussed in detail the terms of loans that may be made by members and friends, but proposals would be brought to a future meeting.
After further discussion and comment the Chairman read the following resolution:-
We hereby authorise the Deacons to purchase a Manse at a cost not exceeding £8,000, this sum to include all legal and other expenses. This is subject to the following provisos :-
1) The Manse Fund should stand at a minimum of £1,250
2) Interest Free Loans of at least £500 have been received. These loans to be for a minimum period of 5 years.
3) The necessary borrowing facilities shall be available for the balance of the purchase price, these facilities be approved by the Deacons.
The Manse to be held in the names of five Church members as trustees for the church and shall be appointed by the diaconate. In the event of any one of the trustees ceasing to be a member of the Church, he shall automatically relinquish the position of trustee and another trustee shall be appointed by the Deacons in his place.
This was proposed by Mr Axtell, seconded by Mrs Buckingham and unanimously agreed.
The Deacons had suggested that a sub-committee comprising Mr and Mrs Bonnett and Mr and Mrs Jones be appointed to find a suitable house. Mr Dyer proposed a resolution from the Chair and this was unanimously agreed.
In concluding the business of the meeting Mr Dyer mentioned the tremendous opportunity that now confronted the Fellowship and the vital need for enthusiasm, commitment and above all constant prayer. Prayer had already been answered in a wonderful way.
Annual General Meeting This was agreed for the 7th March.
Fellowship Hour 26th March, 1972 Mr Dyer said that the deacons felt it would be appropriate to hold a Fellowship Hour on 26th March following the Evening Service. This service would be the last that Dr Hodge would conduct as Minister of the Church. It was agreed that a suitable gift be presented to Dr & Mrs Hodge on that occasion as a tangible expression of our gratitude for their ministry over the last 2½ years. The treasurer would be happy to receive donations towards the gift.
The meeting had a time of prayer in which several members took part. The meeting closed with a hymn and the benediction.

Secretary’s Report 1972
This past year has proved to be a very eventful one in the life of the Church. When writing last year I wondered what had happened that was new, this cannot be said of 1971/72.
It has been a year in which God has been at work – the first baptisms for many years, a small but record increase in membership for recent years, the granting of help to the Church by the Baptist Home Mission Fund and the call of a new Minister – certainly an eventful year.
First, and perhaps the most important, the retirement at the end of this month of Dr Hodge which was announced during 1971. It is difficult to express how much we owe to the devotion and leadership of Dr Hodge over the past two-and-a-half years. He came when the need was great and some of us finding the going hard. He leaves us with all members invigorated and encouraged and looking forward to the new Ministry. This was the purpose of his coming and how adequately he has fulfilled his task can be judged not only by we as members, but also by the attitude of the Baptist Union to our future plans. Although this is not the moment to record our gratitude as this will be done later in the month, I must say how much we have appreciated Dr Hodge’s ministry and how grateful we should be to God for his leading in the matter.
Then we record the call and acceptance by Mr Derek Tidball to the Ministry of this Church – the induction (D.V.) for September. We greatly appreciate the help which the Baptist Home Mission Fund has promised for the future and also the way in which our friends of the Herts Baptist Association and Baptist Corporation propose to help by giving loans towards the purchase of the manse, another step to which the Church is now committed.
The commitments which the Church has taken on over the past years are considerable and represent acts of faith and dependence on God, combined with a readiness on the part of the vast majority of the membership to accept the responsibilities these decisions involve. It is a tremendous joy to every one of us to see our membership actively supporting the Church by prayer, by attendance and by financial assistance. I hope our Church is a place where friendships are easily made but over the coming days, may it also be easy for anyone coming to us to find the greatest Friend of all.
Our membership has increased from 45 to 51, an increase of 6; last year the increase was 5, so we have improved slightly over the previous year’s growth. In 1965 the membership was 38 and it remained there until 1970 when it increased to 40, so that since Dr Hodge joined us the membership has increased by one third.
We were very sorry to lose Mr Purton who died suddenly last autumn. His presence is greatly missed and there has been no one to replace him in many of the jobs he did around the Church. He served the Church for many years as organist, as caretaker, as an expert decorator and in a variety of other ways. We thank God for every remembrance of him.
[Stanley Purton died at the age of 55 having first become a member of NBC in 1936, and both a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent in 1939. Served in the forces 1943-1950].
The baptistry was opened in the summer for the first time for some years, eight of our young people were baptised, three later becoming church members. It has been an encouragement to see the way in which a number of the young people who were converted at the young peoples’ Easter houseparty have carried on in the Christian life. The Young People’s Fellowship report records this houseparty as the highlight of a year when God’s spirit was at work. Numbers in the Young People’s Fellowship remain much the same at 18, two have moved away, two or three lost interest, but other younger ones have replaced them. There is still a dramatic shortage of boys – it is surprising for the girls are not unattractive! Six of the young people gained the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Silver Standard, four of whom are now attempting the gold standard, and seven younger members are starting on the bronze award. A very happy year in the Young People’s Fellowship.
Concerning the Senior Girl Adventurers, Mr Barker reports that this has been a year of change for them. After losing a few to the Y.P.F. and gaining more from Adventurers, there were 26 possible names on the book. But with fluctuating attendances, it was difficult to plan activities and teach to a syllabus, so pressure was put on to improve attendance. The outcome was a class of 13 with remarkably regular attendance which made it a much easier
Group to handle. Another improvement to the Class was the arrival of Mrs Kemp-Harper to help with the Monday night activities and the Sunday teaching.
Mr Bonnett tells us that in June 1971 the Boy Adventurers celebrated their first birthday with Birthday Bangers! During May, June and July outdoor activities included football, cricket, rounders, swimming and visits to the castle and fire station. Tuesday meetings in Spring and Autumn included many activities built round themes on such varied topics as rockets,
transport, countries, decimal day and newspapers! In March the boys joined with the girls and seniors for a successful parents evening. In June an enjoyable outing was held to Wickstead Park even though the weather was not kind. Attendances have been similar to last year; averaging 10 on Sundays and 15 on Tuesdays.
When writing my report a year ago there were 16 girls who belonged to Girl Adventurers, but after some had left and others passed to Senior Adventurers, there was left a nucleus of 5. Miss Medlock reports that after the recruiting Saturday in September, the numbers increased to 14 and now number 18. All the girls attend either Northchurch Adventurers, Kings Road, St Mary’s or St Peter’s on a Sunday and regularly on Fridays. Gillian Dyer [daughter of Alan Dyer] and Jane Goode are now helping with such things as playing the piano, organising games, helping with craftwork and clearing up. The activities have included many handcrafts, competitive games, singing games, quiz and record evenings, sports, swimming and rambles back in the summer. Each evening closes with choruses and prayer – the girls love singing. Last Easter a badge scheme was started involving attendance, bringing back Adventure leaflets, and effort at the things done each week. Prizes have been received by a number of girls, and the group is lively and happy.
Mrs Bonnett as a leader produces three reports – how much we owe to her work in the church
First the Primary where she reports another happy year. She regrets that there is a further slight decrease in attendance. It is noticeable that children coming from homes where the parents are apparently not interested are spasmodic in attendance, particularly if they have to be brought to church. Needless to say she welcomes any new recruits from the age of 3 upwards. In addition to their regular Sunday period, the Primary participated fully in special events such as the Young People’s Weekend, Harvest Service and Carols for the family, the latter event always a firm favourite with both children and parents. They also enjoyed their New Year Party and summer picnic. They were delighted to welcome Miss Elizabeth Ogilvy-Stuart on to their staff in September and she is proving a great asset in this work.
Turning now to the work amongst the ladies of the Church, Mrs Bonnett as leader of the Ladies Wednesday Group tells us that the increase in membership following the change of name from “Young Wives” at the beginning of the year has continued, and as a result meetings have been lively and well attended. Once again the ladies have endeavoured to cover a wide range of subjects and activities in their programmes, and practical help by way of donations has been given to TEAR Fund, the London City Mission, West Ham Central Mission and Spurgeon’s Homes.
Members of the Wednesday Group are given a regular invitation to our Sunday services and are encouraged to participate in all the special events of the church.
The Women’s Own report that the past year has been one of great encouragement, and the number attending the weekly meetings has shown a definite increase. Several of the highlights of the year have been in connection with the Herts Federation of Baptist Women’s League, and in March they were privileged to attend the Spring Rally when their own President, Mrs Hodge, was inducted as Federation President. Later in the year there was a very successful President’s evening at Northchurch. Other functions and outings have included a Federation Garden Party, and indoor ‘garden’ party, which was much enjoyed in spite of the inclement weather, a visit to Syon Park, and the Carol afternoon in December followed by a Christmas tea. More recently they enjoyed an entertainment by the Evergreen Concert Party.
Mrs Bonnett expresses her gratitude to the many speakers who serve faithfully week by week as for a number of the Women’s Own this is their only opportunity to attend a devotional service. It should be mentioned that the Women’s gifts to B.M.S reached a record sum last year of £12.
The Evening Prayer Meeting, and Bible Study continues to be small – Dr Hodge and the Deacons have considered what might be done to encourage more to attend. What a wonderful thing it would be if all who are here tonight could come to the meeting, if not every week, as regularly as possible. What a difference it would make – what about it? God does hear and answer prayer. This has been proved during the past year.
That we have an interest in the work of God abroad is evidenced by our interest in Missionary Activity. The Birthday Scheme membership grows, now 38, and £20 was given in this way last year. We are very grateful to Miss Dell and Miss Mayo for their faithful attention to this scheme and they in turn are grateful to all who give. In total we gave away to the work of God at home and abroad over £250 and in addition, over £50 to the Home Mission Fund. We must ensure that with our future increased financial responsibilities in Northchurch, we do not neglect the cause of Christ overseas.
As always, we are grateful to Mt Tecwyn Jones and also to Mr Parry, both of whom have helped with the Church fabric, to Mrs Jones who adds so much to our worship each Sunday by playing the organ so splendidly for us, and to Mrs Standing who is so ready to assist whenever Mrs Jones is away. We would also like to thank Miss dell and Miss Mayo and all others who give and arrange flowers. May we also thank everyone who has cleaned the Church over the past year. We know this is not a welcome task but how well it has been done shown by the shining pews and dust-free window ledges. Thank you all very much indeed – your help will continue to be needed in the future, I’m afraid.
What of the future! We now have an enormous challenge and opportunity. Can we in 1972 do just that little more for the Lord than in 1971. We could be on the brink of a further wonderful move forward. Let us introduce others to the Church – adults, children, young people, let us get even more enthusiastic about what God can do in Northchurch. He gave all for us – what have we really given to Him? May there be for all of us in this coming year, a leap forward into a greater more effective service for Christ.

Notes of a Special Church Meeting held on 7th March 1972
Mr Dyer (Chairman) and 15 Church Members present.
The Minutes of the previous special church meeting were read, approved by the meeting and were then signed by the Chairman.
Manse Mr Dyer made a statement on the present situation concerning the purchase of a Manse. The following points were specially mentioned.
a) The Baptist Union will not loan money for the purchase of a Manse unless they are appointed Trustees. The deacons had fully considered the matter and recommended to the Church that the B.U. be appointed trustees of the Manse. The following motion was proposed by Mr T Jones, seconded by Mr Bonnett and unanimously approved:-
“That the Baptist Union Corporation Limited be requested to become Sole Trustees of The premises held or to be held in connection with the Northchurch Baptist Church and known as the Manse.”
b) The Baptist Union Corporation were prepared to loan £2,000 at a low rate of interest – probably 4%.
c) The H.B.A. were prepared to loan £500 at 3%.
d) A proposed form of loan note had been drawn up by Mr Derek Warren and this was read by Mr Dyer. The meeting approved the note. It was agreed that the minimum loan should be £25.
e) With the constant increase in the price of property, the deacons thought that authority to go to a total of £10,000 for the purchase price including legal fees was necessary. After discussion the meeting unanimously approved the motion which was proposed by Mr T Jones and seconded by Mr Bonnett.
f) The Church had been offered interest free loans of £1,000 to date.
g) The Church had a second option on a house in Orchard Avenue at a cost of £8,850.
h) Mrs Dyer proposed and Mr Bonnett seconded a resolution that a letter be sent to all church members explaining the need for loans and the terms under which loans would be accepted and made. The motion was unanimously approved. Mr McDonald agreed to send a letter.
Any Other Business a) Mr Dyer reported that any monies paid by London Bible College to Mr Tidball would be over and above that which he would receive as Pastor of our Church. Mr Tidball would be conducting the services on 18th June and it was agreed to have coffee following the evening service to give Mr Tidball the opportunity of meeting as many people as possible.
b) The morning Communion Service for March would be held on 26th to enable Mr Hodge to receive Mrs Kirwan into membership.
Future events were mentioned as follows:-
c) Young Peoples weekend would be held on 29th and 30th April.

b) The surveyor’s report on the property was favourable.
c) The financial implications were fully explained.
d) The Baptist Union Corporation would become trustees of the Manse on behalf of the Church.
After discussion, during which it was mentioned that the loan[s] made by Church members were of the order of £3,000 thus obviating the need to increase any mortgage loan to meet the increased cost of the property, it was proposed by Mr Bonnett, seconded by Mr Barker and unanimously approved that the Church proceed with the purchase of the property, 4 Peter’s Place and that the Baptist Union Corporation be appointed trustees of the property.
Thanks Mr Dyer proposed a vote of thanks to Mr & Mrs Bonnett and Mr & Mrs T Jones for all their endeavours in seeking a property that would be suitable as a Manse. This was unanimously approved.
